The team of 5 met at the usual Brookline one stop gas and DD stop. The team consisted of two youngsters and 3 grown men known to act as boys. We hit a little bit of a blizzard in the Notch and found sunlight 20 miles later. The lot at Nash Stream was full for a late season Sunday. We had one snafu with a zipper on the young fellas jacket. Some tools, tape and we were off.
We went east right away up 117 to 19 / 119 along some bumpy terrain for a while until we reached a terrific viewing area. We could see 100 miles in every direction. #3 pointed out some Maine mountains as he handed out PERSONALIZED waters (nice touch) for the team of 5 along with some yummy trail mix. It was sunny and clear unlike in the Notch. It was cold but perfect for riding. The trails became more groomed and fast. We stopped to see the Bison on the outskirts of Errol. Those things just looked like hairy Porterhouse Steaks to me. The two youngsters travel along at a perfect pace. They both have great skills and excellent instincts for riding. We found our way 60 miles north at the Diamond Pond warming hut for some Gas and lunch.
My pull start broke. (All non-Ski-Doo riders giggle). #2 had it going within 5 minutes. Hes got a talent for that kind of stuff. We shut off my machine and enjoyed the old ladies cooking at the DP clubhouse. I went out early to try to manually pull start my machine. It only took 3 tries. I was feeling my manhood at this point. I wanted to go hunting or something. When I put my tool kit away I broke my thumbnail, ouch damn! Not so tough anymore. After that we went out on to Diamond Pond. They had some big mound of snow 50 feet in the air that created a jump at the top. #3, 3Jr and #7 all hit it. My heart was pumping when I landed the jump. #2, please say you got the video.
We rode from there to Pittsburgh. The day became colder, but we pushed on north of the town of Pitts for a big loop. We encountered some great riding throughout this day. I kept thinking how great it would be to ride with my two kids #2 and #3 were beaming throughout the day with pride, as well they should.
We headed south at this point. #2 had eyes on the Balsams and Dixville Peak.We rode through the tunnel and took a short break. #3 and I fell behind and had to catch up to the other 3 through some bumpy terrain. This was the most fun time of the day. We had our thumbs to the handlebars absolutely flying to catch the others before the big mountain ride of Dixville Peak. We basically caught up at the base. 5 of us, energized by the awesome bumps and steep hills just blasted up that zig zagging hill. When riders ride that close that fast there is undeniable energy and synchronicity at that time. It was the best riding of the day. All were tired before and after the peak, but not during.
We blasted the last 30 miles to the truck for 192 for the day. It was an unreal last ride of the season for me.
Thank you all!
