It may come as a surprise to some of you? WPR is planning to participate in the 2014 APBA Northeast Hydroplane racing circuit. First race is scheduled for May 17th in Standish, Maine. This is coming up quick.
Our entry, race number 229-A, is Powered by a Yamato 302. Testing began on Sunday with mixed results. Our first set up of the boat saw some low 60 mph speeds. We need to be in the mid 60s to be 1st place competitive. This is encouraging due to the fact that we hand not hung the motor before and our initial set up was with safety in mind. Additional tweeting to the prop height in relationship to the bottom of the boat should result in an increase of speed. In addition, conditions on the water were not ideal. Gusty winds in the traditional Monomonac swirling fashion promised a high level of surface unpredictability. After numerous successful passes, the day ended with the boat lifting off the water and inverting in the air. Test Rookie driver, yet to be numbered in our membership, was ejected and suffered minor injuries and a temporary set back to his confidence. The boat also suffered minor damage that appears to be limited to the wind screen and the front left sponson. Have no fear race fans, this is scheduled to be repaired this week in Dighton, MA. The motor was drained and dried in a three part process and was returned to our West Townsend race shop for finial adjustment. After several attempts, it was restarted and appears not to have suffered and damage. These Yamotos are known to be racer friendly and nearly bulletproof. This is the main reason they are so popular.
If all goes as planned, a second test day is scheduled for this weekend. All all WPR members are welcome and encouraged to participate.
