RE: GPs

Garmin is my brand of choice....Kind of vested with all of the maps i have...

I have a Etrex Venture and a Nuvi 50...They both work well and allow me to download the gpx files to use in Garmin's  "base camp".

The etrex is water proof (so they say) and is more geared for outdoor use and give yo much more usability to store tracks (your telemetry) whenever you decide its small and getting harder to see every year, the Nuvi is for the car and you get no options to save a track....it just saves everything until you do a master reset.

I would think the etrex would suit your need better but if you already have a car gps you could probably make it work
