I did my first karting experience down at Foxwoods at Monza. I thought I was flying as there was a display trackside that listed your position and track time each lap just past the start line - it took me about half the race to realize the screen was changing and I was the first name listed ON PAGE TWO of the list! Ugh. I was actually in 5th place.
But I finished in the Top 6 which was enough to get me into the final race (top 6 from each heat race). Now I was racing against the fastest drivers in our group. It was humbling. I was in 7th place (out of 12) until the guy behind me for about 5 laps, who, admittedly, I could tell was faster than me, but I held the racing line and he could not get around, so he pushed me in a divebomb move and we both spun.
The moral of the story is that the winner was, get this, on a track that was probably a 1/4 mile around - 10 SECONDS FASTER THAN ME PER LAP!! Ya. 10. That means I lost almost a second in every corner to him. Now, my defense is that he is from Spain and said he was the karting champion in his region back home. So. Okay I can live with that result on my first time out.
