So #5, departs 9 minutes behind schedule due the ground strap breaking as the trailer rolled it's first few feet of the 2008-2009 season. Wanted to make the Pres' house on time so I employed the 'ground thru ball' method. So with the christmas tree trailer in tow made it to the meeting point 9 minutes late. Grabbed flashlight and wrench and dove under the trailer as the #2 loaded the killer bee. We are off.
Made good time to our first and only planned stop at the Brookline DD for gas, reg + breakfast of champions. The drive north held good promise for the day as the conditions varied from light puffy to complete coverage, but there was never bare ground. The snow began in earnest as we unloaded at the (new) Diamond Pond Club House (I will always remember this new club house as the 'puking station'). The trails from here had good snow on them but not fully groomed. So it was mid-speed going with several wash-outs to negotiate.
The trails got better and better as we made our way north (see gps details for the data). I wasn't paying too much attention to the trails we used. I do recall we had to do one detour to 134 and then 135 to get around a logging operation. It seems like a lot of logging activity this year so be flexible on your plans. We made Young's store and filled the tanks (only 3 gallons) and our stomachs (#2-corned beef; #5-turkey). It was cold, windy and snowing like crazy, so we just mounted back up and crossed the street. Now the trails took on mid-season form and the Pres and I really got up to normal riding speeds. Up to the top of the U.S. and back down on 143. There was, as we were told, much more snow on these trails to the east. We even pulled off and played in a pit for a few.
Now down to 112 and a couple high speed bursts. I hit 75mph at two points when I had perfect visibility. There was actually more traffic on the trails then I have ever seen up here. This was due to the holiday week. Many families out. Was nice to see, but reinforced why we (at least I) only ride on weekdays when I come this far north.
It was a pretty uneventful ride but tons of fun to be out again doing the sport we love. We were back at the truck at 4:30pm with 105 miles logged for the season for me so far. I realize that we drove to Colebrook but after dropping off the Pres it had taken me 5 hours to come home. That was a long drive but worth the extra time to get to the northern trails.
Both sleds ran perfectly and are ready for the next "group" ride. I am ready to set the next ride date. It's funny, unlike #99, looking at my truck, trailer and even sled covered with salt and dirt, it actually makes me smile versus upset. But I was raised in the sport with a different mentality: ride 'em > break 'em > fix 'em > ride 'em!
