2013-2014 Season Starting!!! Snowmobile clubs and the Bureau are finishing up trail projects to be ready for this season. This riding season marks the 40th Anniversary of the creation of the Bureau of Trails (originally created in 1973 as the Bureau of Off Highway Vehicles), and what a 40 years it has been. NH boasts over 7000 miles of maintained snowmobile trails, which connect all four borders of our state to riding with our neighbors. We work with more than 5000 landowners across the state, that generously allow public snowmobile use of their private lands and we work in cooperation with 108 snowmobile clubs. Snowmobiling in NH is in excess of a $586 Million dollar industry annually and it is run by volunteers, not employees.
Most trails traditionally open on Dec 15th but the last few years we have had later snow and most trails opened later. We are tracking a winter storm for this weekend that may put 6-12" of snow (powdery) onto trails in the southern half of the state and up to 6" on trails in the north. Northern snow is expected tonight also. The new on-line NHSA map is available. See the link below. Yeti and Snow Miser are certainly working their winter magic to bring in an early riding season in NH. They will continue to work up winter storms for us in preparation for the Easter Seals Ride-In in February.
Reciprocal Weekend is Jan 31st-Feb 2nd. Snowmobiles with a valid NH Registration will be able to ride on all trails in VT and ME that weekend; ME and VT sleds will be able to ride here. Without your registration you get to ride nowhere; put the stickers on the sleds now!
Some early, ungroomed, riding may be available on the recreational rail trails by late Sunday. Gates will not be opened at this time and riders should use the bypasses on these trails. Most other gates will also be closed so riders should use caution and wait for clubs to open gates before riding on other trails. Bodies of water are not yet frozen. Stay off lakes and ponds.
