RE: Ride Friday Feb 10th Nash Stream

Ride report 2/11/2017 Nash Stream to Errol

We got up early and chatted with some Arctic Cat riders from Plymouth, MA over continental breakfast at Cabot. Those guys were going to ride right from the Hotel.  We were going to the ole drop spot at Nash Stream. We were suited up and on the trail by 8:15am. We went immediately east for a planned short day of riding. We took 117 through the woods and power lines on a freshly groomed surface. In skiing its called first tracks. We had it all the way to Errol and most of the day. The riding was fast, despite the fact that the trails are a bit skinnier than the normal 5s and 28s.  This day was a good 10 degrees warmer than the previous day so the riding was a bit more enjoyable.  We had a couple stops on our way to Errol, just brief moments to figure where we were going and to talk about conditions. Before long we were at the river and bridge that lets us know we are around the corner from Errol.  We gassed up at the Errol Trading post. We got drinks, a local map and looked at all the cool stuff they have in that store.

After our stop we headed out the back route behind the Trading Post. We went through a strange tunnel towards Umbagog Lake.  This riding was great, we followed a drive on/ride on road too far and actually missed a turn. #2s trusty GPS let us know our path was interrupted. We doubled back and found our way south down route 18. We made what amounted to a big figure 8 as we headed back toward the truck on 114 to 28. We stopped for some trail mix, some light conversation and we were off on some good, old, friendly, wide open trails. This quality riding with this much snow cannot be taken for granted. Both #2 and #7 had some great fund riding. Im used to my new sled that now has in excess of 700 miles on it. I have a few tweeks that I need to make and Ill be satisfied. The expected Saturday crowds never seemed to rear their ugly faces. I kept thinking we would see more sleds out there. I guess its a good thing.

OOHHH, The strangest thing Ive ever seen on a trail. An older Ski Doo on fire on route 5. We stopped for a photo shoot and to scratch our heads in disbelief. There were some others riders there checking it out too. Its strange to see a burnt and melted mess of a snowmobile on fire on the side of a major trail. Did they light it on fire as a tribute for someone? Did they not have enough pee in their blatters to put out the flames? There certainly was plenty of snow around to throw on the fire, but no one appeared to have done that.  We loaded up the trailer with 83 miles under our belts and headed back to Mass so I could join my wife and her siblings for dinner in Franklin.  This poor planning interrupted some pretty good riding. I should have mapped out the weekend a little better.

It was a great ride and great weekend. Thanks, as always, to the Prez.  I have zero pictures from this trip, my phone froze and died both days.

Ride Report 02/10/2017 Nash Stream to Pittsburg

I picked up the Prez a solid 30 minutes late on Friday morning due to the extra snow on the highway. The driving to Nash Stream was slow. A late start, all my fault, gave the two of us lift-off at 10:00am. We headed straight for Dixville Peak up 5 to 110 for that familiar ride. We actually went the non-favorable direction towards the Balsams. Some of the coolest riding experiences have been going up that long hill the other direction. The peaks and valleys around this area are great any way you go.

The Balsams resort looks like the city or Chernobyl.  The grooming was exceptional all weekend and the Prez lead the whole time. We had not filled our gas tanks from our last trip so we decided to fill up at the Diamond Pond clubhouse (which was closed). It was zero degrees out and the temps were dropping as we headed north towards Pittsburg.  Snow conditions were optimal, but the coldness left an imprint in the side of my face, just a little bit of frostbite. As #5 once said, I wear it like a badge of honor back here in the real world.   We made it to Youngs store for lunch around 1pm. #2 asked if I wanted to continue on to Buck Rub Pub. I did not know if they were even open on a Friday afternoon and I said no way, lets go get warm and eat something hot.  After the Prezs obligatory Rueben sandwich we went over to the store so I could buy a hoodie sweatshirt for the second half of the day. This really helped the cause. From there we headed north up route 20 to see #2s neighbors new cabin right on the trail. At this point we saw some deer right up close. One even walked up within 40 feet of me.

We headed south pretty much the same way we came north with a few exceptions. Somewhere around Diamond Pond, we came up behind a Moose (see the pictures). We followed gingerly so as not to startle this immense beast. There was actually a groomer coming from the other direction that made the moose stop and contemplate a new route. It turned around and looked at the Prez and #7, who were standing and staring at this giant goofy beast. I thought it was going to charge at us, but it ran into the deep snow off the trail. Cool sighting, the 2 groomers both stopped and provided a courtesy to the moose.

At lunch we pretty much decided to keep the day short. The temps were pretty nasty and only get worse after dark.  We made it back to the truck around 5pm and did the quickest cold a$$ load up youve ever seen. We stopped by Dalton Powersports to pick up a spare belt for me. Yep, Ive been riding without one (insert lecture on how I should never do that again). Then we got back to the Cabot Inn for take-out pizza and a couple beers.  It was a great day of riding. I made a mental note to purchase some extreme cold weather gear for occasions like these.

The trails are in mid-season form, gentlemen.

Is anyone up for a ride Friday, Feb 10th perhaps even staying over and riding Saturday Feb 11th?

My truck is going, I think the Pez is coming too. Snow reports are favorable with 5-8 inches of white fluff on Tuesday.
